Travel Grants

The BROADNETS 2006 organizing committee is expecting the availability of Student Travel Grants, sponsored by the National Science Foundation. Applications are invited from qualified graduate students studying in U.S. institutions. Up to 20 awards are expected.

Eligibility
To be eligible, graduate students must be pursuing a graduate degree at an accredited institution in the United States.

Award amount
For students who are more than two hours driving distance (non-local), the grant will cover the following expenses (up to a maximum of US $800):

  • Economy airfare, on a US-based carrier
  • Lodging
  • Per-diem
  • Conference registration

For students who are less than two hours driving distance (local), the grant will cover the following expenses (up to a maximum of US $300):

  • Lodging
  • Per-diem
  • Conference registration fees ($220)

Students will be reimbursed (based on receipts) for their expenses after the conference is over.

How to Apply
An application for a travel award will consist of:

  • A letter from the student;
  • Student's vita; and,
  • A supporting letter from the student's graduate advisor.

The letter from the student should include:

  • Title of papers authored and to be presented by the student at BROADNETS;
  • A brief summary of research interests and accomplishments to date;
  • A description of areas and events (symposia, workshops, tutorials) reflected in the BROADNETS 2006 program that would impact the student's research; and
  • A brief statement indicating why attendance at BROADNETS 2006 is important to the student.

The student's advisor's recommendation letter to the committee should include:

  • Confirmation that the student is a bona-fide Ph.D. or M.S. candidate in good standing;
  • Suitability of the BROADNETS program material to the student's research area;
  • Ways this particular student would benefit from attendance at the conference; and,
  • Strengths and potential contributions of the student.

The award decisions will be mailed out on September 1, 2006.
